Believe it or not but 8.02pm on February 20, 2002 was an historic moment in time. It was not marked by the chiming of any clocks or the ringing of bells, but at that precise time, on that specific date, something happened which has not occurred for 1,001 years and will never happen again. As the clock ticks over from 8.01pm on Wednesday, February 20, time was, for sixty seconds only, read in perfect symmetry 2002, 2002, 2002, or to be more precise - 20:02, 20/02, 2002. This historic event will never have the same poignancy as the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month which marks Armistice Day, but it is an event which has only ever happened once before, and is something which will never be repeated. The last occasion that time read in such a symmetrical pattern was long before the days of the digital watch and the 24-hour clock - at 10.01am on January 10, 1001. And because the clock only goes up to 23.59, it is something that will never happen again. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` THE YEAR 1904 Maybe this will boggle your mind, I know it did mine! The year is 1904 one hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some of the U.S. statistics for
1904: Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was onl y the 21st most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower! The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents
an hour. Sugar cost four cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor
people from entering the country for any reason. 1. Pneumonia and influenza The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was 30!!! Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced
tea hadn't been invented. And I can forwarded this to someone else without typing it myself, and sent it to you in a matter of seconds! Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years. |
